Pantry Pest Guide for Long Island Homeowners: Beetles, Moths and Weevils

Identify and eliminate pantry pests in your Nassau County, Suffolk County, or Queens home. Guide from Quest Pest Control.

Finding Bugs in Your Food? A Pantry Pest Guide for Long Island

Opening a bag of flour to find it crawling with tiny brown beetles, or discovering webbing in a box of cornmeal, is one of the more unsettling pest discoveries a homeowner can make. Pantry pests — a group that includes grain beetles, flour weevils, Indian meal moths, and several other species — are surprisingly common in homes throughout Nassau County, Suffolk County, and Queens.

The good news: pantry pests are not dangerous. The bad news: by the time you find them in one product, they've almost certainly infested others. Here's how to identify, eliminate, and prevent them.

Common Pantry Pest Species

Indian Meal Moth — The most commonly encountered pantry pest in Long Island homes. Small moths (5/8 inch wingspan), with distinctive reddish-brown and cream-colored wings. You'll see adult moths flying around the kitchen, particularly in the evening. But the damage is done by the caterpillar-like larvae, which spin silken webbing in infested products. Found in: flour, cornmeal, dried pasta, cereals, spices, dried fruit, nuts, birdseed, and pet food.

Merchant Grain Beetle and Saw-Toothed Grain Beetle — Tiny (1/8 inch), flat, brown beetles with distinctive serrated edges along their thorax (saw-toothed). They penetrate tightly sealed packaging and infest a wide variety of stored dry goods. These beetles are the most common reason homeowners in Hempstead, Garden City, and Valley Stream find "bugs in the cereal."

Rice Weevil and Granary Weevil — Small beetles with an elongated snout. Found specifically in whole grain products: rice, dried corn, wheat, and pasta. Unlike grain beetles, weevils develop entirely inside individual grain kernels, making infested products look fine until opened.

Drugstore Beetle and Cigarette Beetle — Found in an extraordinary range of products including spices, dried herbs, chocolate, dried pasta, and even medications and books. Small (1/8 inch), brown, and rounded.

How Infestations Start

Most pantry pest infestations begin not in your home, but in the store or warehouse. Eggs are laid in products during processing or storage, and hatch in your pantry under the warmer conditions of a home kitchen. Infestations can also enter through:

Birdseed — one of the most common sources of Indian meal moth introduction

Pet food — dry kibble and treats are highly susceptible

Bulk bin purchases — grains, nuts, and dried fruit from bulk bins carry higher infestation risk

Seasonal products — decorative dried corn, spices, and holiday baking ingredients stored for months

Eliminating a Pantry Pest Infestation

1. Empty the entire pantry — remove and inspect every item, including spices, pet food, and anything in cardboard packaging

2. Discard all infested and suspect items — moths and beetles can penetrate cardboard and thin plastic; when in doubt, throw it out

3. Vacuum all pantry shelves — pay particular attention to corners, shelf edges, and cracks where eggs and larvae accumulate

4. Clean with soap and water — wipe all surfaces; allow to dry completely before restocking

5. Install pheromone traps — Indian meal moth traps use species-specific pheromones to monitor and reduce adult populations

6. Restock in sealed containers — transfer all dry goods to glass or hard plastic containers with airtight lids

Preventing Future Infestations

Inspect packaging at the store — avoid products with torn corners, holes, or webbing

Rotate stock — use oldest items first and don't let products sit unopened for extended periods

Store in airtight containers — this is the single most effective prevention measure

Keep pantry cool and dry — heat and humidity accelerate pest development
